Used ultrasound machines
Used and refurbished ultrasound machines are sold unit by unit, and each verified vendor who quotes on your request offers a unit of its own.
A used ultrasound system is preowned and sold as-is, in the condition its vendor states. Two units of the same model can run different software and come with different probes. Each has its own service history, so the unit a vendor quotes matters more than the model’s name.
- What every quote states
- A price and a condition, plus the warranty, probes included, year, service coverage, delivery and an inspection reference when the vendor gives them
- Cost to you
- There is no fee to submit a request, to receive quotes or to buy through a vendor you found here.
How buying a used system works here
Describe the used system you need
You ask for preowned, on its own or beside new, with what you will be scanning and your delivery ZIP. You can name a model or leave it open to equivalents.
Get quotes from verified vendors
Each vendor sees the system you asked for and the first three digits of your ZIP.
Compare the quotes and reply
You reply to the vendors you choose, and only a vendor you reply to gets your name and email.
What to check before you buy a used system
Electrical safety
Have a biomedical technician run electrical safety tests on the system, and a leakage test on each probe, before it scans a patient.
Every probe
Look at each probe’s lens, housing, cable and connector for cracks and bent pins, and run the system’s own probe test where it has one. Confirm which probes the quote includes.
Software and options
Record the software version and every installed option, and see each option you are paying for run. Keep the option keys with the system’s paperwork.
Start-up and logs
Let the system finish its start-up self-test without an error, and read its usage and error logs where it keeps them.
The battery
On a portable or handheld system, scan on a full charge to see how long it lasts, and reject a swollen, leaking or damaged battery.
Controls and the case
Test every key, the trackball and the touch screen, and look for cracks in the case and residue from spilled gel or fluid.
The previous owner’s patient data
Confirm that patient images and records from the previous owner have been erased.
Serial number, service history and clearance
Match the serial number on the system to its paperwork, ask who has serviced it, and confirm that the system and each probe offered are FDA-cleared.
Delivery and installation
Ask how the system will reach you and whether installation is included. A quote shows delivery terms when the vendor gives them.
Every model page has a “what to check” section written for that machine, and all models links to each one.

Used, refurbished or new
Used
A used system usually costs the least of the three, and it is the one where your own checks matter most.
Refurbished
A vendor has serviced and tested the system to a standard it describes, and usually adds a warranty of its own. The word has no single definition, and refurbished ultrasound machines lists the questions that settle what was done.
New
A new system costs the most and comes with a warranty and the software its maker ships. The cost guide gives general prices for new and refurbished systems.

Questions about buying a used system
What does “preowned” cover?
It covers any system that has had an owner before, sold as-is or refurbished by a vendor. The request’s one choice for both is Buy preowned, and you ask the vendor you reply to which one its unit is.
Who checks a used machine?
You check it, or a biomedical technician you choose does. Each vendor states the condition of the system it quotes, and you can ask it for test and service records. You have the system checked before it scans a patient.
Can I ask for a warranty?
Yes. A quote shows a warranty’s length when the vendor gives one. If it has none, or not enough, you ask that vendor when you reply and get the warranty’s terms in writing before you commit.
How old is too old?
There is no single cut-off. Each model page gives the year the model came out and its software, where those are known. For the unit itself, you ask the vendor which software release it runs and whether it can still be serviced and updated.
Can I trade in my old system?
You can trade it in against a purchase. Your request can include the system you are trading in, and a vendor that sees it can take it into account when it quotes. How a trade-in works.
