New, refurbished or used?

New

A new system costs the most, and it comes with a warranty and the software the maker ships with it.

Refurbished

A vendor services and tests the system to a standard it describes, usually with a warranty of its own. What that work covers varies from vendor to vendor, and refurbished ultrasound machines lists the five questions that settle it.

Used

A used system is sold as it is, in the condition the vendor states, and it usually costs the least. Used ultrasound machines lists nine checks to run before you buy.

The costs beyond the sticker price

Probes, service, training and setup are priced on top of the ultrasound system, and their ranges come from the same source as the system prices above.

Extra probes, a service contract and training can add about a third to the system’s price.

Eight questions to settle before you request quotes

  1. Which exams will you run most often?

On the request: your specialty, and the exams the system must handle.

  2. Which probes do those exams need?

On the request: must-have probes or exams. Price any you add against the probe table.

  3. New, refurbished or either?

On the request: Buy new, Buy preowned, or both. Refurbished systems come under Buy preowned.

  4. A specific brand or model line?

On the request: a preferred model, or “open to equivalents” to let vendors propose one.

  5. How long a warranty, and who backs it?

Ask the vendor. A quote shows a warranty’s length when the vendor gives one.

  6. Which software packages, and are updates covered?

Ask the vendor when you reply.

  7. What service and training are in the price?

    Ask the vendor.

  8. Buy, finance or lease, and can you trade in?

On the request, for a purchase: a switch to ask for financing terms, and a place for your trade-in. Agree on a lease with the vendor.

Financing and leases

Financing on your request

Vendors, and the lenders they work with, offer financing and leases. On a purchase, your request can ask for financing terms, and every vendor on it sees that you asked. You agree on the terms in writing with the vendor you choose.

A loan and a lease end differently

With a loan, the system is yours once it is paid off. At the end of a lease term, you may return the system, renew the lease or buy the system for an agreed price. More on financing and leasing.

Common questions about ultrasound machine prices

Why do ultrasound prices vary so much?

A handheld and a premium cart-based system are different instruments, and price follows the type of system, its probes and its software options. Condition moves it again, and so does what the vendor includes: warranty, service, delivery and training.

Is a refurbished ultrasound machine safe to buy?

It depends on the vendor’s process, which the five questions on refurbished ultrasound machines bring out, and on a biomedical technician’s electrical safety tests before the system scans a patient.

Do these prices include probes?

The system ranges include a standard probe package. A quote lists the probes it includes when the vendor gives them, and the probe table above prices any other transducer you need.

How do I get a real price?

Vendors quote on your request, and each quote is the price of a system the vendor can supply to you.
