Refurbished ultrasound machines

Vendors quote on one request for a used or refurbished ultrasound machine, and each vendor you reply to can tell you what was done to its unit.

One vendor may replace worn parts, test the system against the maker’s service procedures and give a warranty of its own; another may clean the case and update the software. Both can call the result refurbished, so the word tells you less than the answers to the five questions below.

The five questions that settle what was done to a unit

  1. What was replaced or repaired?

Ask for the list of parts by name: boards, probes, the battery, the monitor, the touch screen.

  2. What was tested, and against what standard?

A vendor’s own checklist and the maker’s service procedures are different standards. Ask which was used, and for the results, electrical safety tests included.

  3. What software version and options does it have now?

Get the software version and the list of installed options, and see each option you are paying for run.

  4. What warranty does the vendor give, and who services it?

Ask how long it runs, what it covers, whether probes are included, and who does the work in your area.

  5. Were the probes tested or replaced?

Ask for each transducer’s test result, or whether it is new. A probe can fail on a system that otherwise passes.

Refurbished, used or new

A refurbished ultrasound machine usually costs more than a used one sold as-is, and less than a new one. The difference is the vendor’s work and often its warranty, so you weigh each quote’s price against what was done to that unit.

You can request any model of these types preowned, whether used or refurbished.

Questions about buying a refurbished ultrasound machine

Is refurbished better than used?

A refurbished unit is worth more than a used one only for what the vendor replaced, tested and warrants. The answers to the five questions above say which of those each vendor did.

Does the maker stand behind a refurbished system?

A maker’s own warranty comes with a system the maker refurbished. A system a vendor refurbished carries that vendor’s warranty, if it gives one. The vendor’s answer to who did the work also tells you whose warranty it is.

Can I ask for refurbished only?

Refurbished systems come under Buy preowned on the request. Any reply you send a vendor can ask whether its unit was refurbished, and how.

Does a refurbished system come with a warranty?

That is the vendor’s to give, and its length and coverage vary. A quote shows a warranty’s length when the vendor gives one, and you can ask for what it covers in writing before you commit.

Who should check a refurbished system before it is used?

A biomedical technician, yours or one you hire. That inspection covers electrical safety tests and a check of each probe, whatever the vendor’s own records say.
