What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON S3000

  1. Get the electrical safety test and service records

Electrical safety tests are required on this system, and Siemens takes no responsibility for its safety or performance if safety-relevant parts were swapped for parts it did not authorize.

How: Ask for the latest electrical safety test results, the service history and a certificate for each repair, and confirm any on-board documentation or storage device was connected by Siemens or a Siemens-approved third party.

  2. Reject transducers with cracked casings or frayed cables

A transducer with a cracked, punctured or discolored casing or a frayed cable must not be used, though discoloration from approved cleaners and disinfectants is acceptable.

How: Inspect every transducer's casing and its full cable, and ask whether the system has been rolled over its cables.

  3. Match the serial and software version to recalls

The FDA recalls on the S Family name the affected software versions and US serial numbers, and identify the S3000 by its model number.

How: Read the model and serial number from the system label and the installed software version, and compare them with the FDA recall records.

  4. Confirm the needle-guide correction, recall Z-2344-2015

With third-party biopsy attachments on the 18L6 HD or 6C1 HD, the needle could travel outside the on-screen guidelines, the subject of FDA recall Z-2344-2015.

How: If the unit comes with an 18L6 HD biopsy guide or a 6C1 HD needle guide, ask for the correction record and verify the needle path against the guidelines before clinical use.

Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON S3000

Is the Siemens ACUSON S3000 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The ACUSON S3000 was first cleared under 510(k) K121138, decided May 17, 2012. Later clearances naming it are K183575, decided March 20, 2019, for the S3000 and S2000 with software VE11A, and K202683, decided October 15, 2020, which names the S1000, S2000 and S3000. It is a Class II device under 21 CFR 892.1550.

Is the Siemens ACUSON S3000 discontinued?

Yes. Siemens launched the S3000 in 2011 and it was FDA-cleared in May 2012; its FDA device record gives December 31, 2021 as the end of its commercial distribution.

How does the ACUSON S3000 differ from the S2000 and S1000?

They differ by focus. The S3000 is the premium system, for General Imaging and Interventional Radiology, with elastography, multi-modality review and contrast-enhanced ultrasound; the S2000 is for General Imaging and Women's Health, and the S1000 for Vascular and Shared Services imaging. All three share the SieStream HD architecture.

Virtual Touch Imaging (VTI), Virtual Touch Quantification (VTQ) and Virtual Touch Imaging Quantification (VTIQ) are cleared under K183575 for the S2000 and S3000. The S1000 does not support VTQ and is not configured for the QUS application.

Do ACUSON S3000 transducers work on the S2000 and S1000?

Most do. The 6C1 HD and 8C3 HD are for the S2000 and S3000 only, and on Classic systems (software VC25 or below) the 8C3 HD is for the S3000 alone.
