What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON S2000

  1. Inspect the power cable and its strain relief

S2000 power cables have split at the IEC connector, frayed from being moved while plugged in or knocked against a wall, and pulled out of the strain relief in transport, leaving a severed wire exposed.

How: Look along the cord and at both connector ends for fraying, splits or bare wire, and have any frayed cable swapped for a new one before use.

  2. Look for fluid ingress at seams and slots

Fluid that seeps through the control-panel seams, the keyboard or the DVD slot can reach the circuitry and cause excessive electrical leakage or system failure.

How: Look around those openings for signs of spilled fluid, and ask which cleaners and disinfectants were used, since products outside the Instructions for Use can damage surfaces and create electrical hazards.

  3. Check biopsy guides against recall Z-2344-2015

When the 18L6 HD or 6C1 HD biopsy guidelines are used with third-party biopsy attachments, the needle could travel outside the guidelines shown on screen.

How: If biopsy guides or the S2000 Biopsy Starter Kit come with the unit, match their identifiers against the recall and ask for its correction records.

  4. Check V5M TEE recalls on early software

On software VA10 through VA16A with cardiac options, the V5M's thermal safety guards did not take effect on its next use if it stayed connected after an automatic thermal shutdown.

How: Read the software version and ask for the correction records for recalls Z-1392-2011 and Z-1884-2011, the second of which left CW mode inoperative during TEE exams at VA15, VA15A and VA15B.

Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON S2000

Is the Siemens ACUSON S2000 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The S2000 was first cleared under 510(k) K072786, decided on November 13, 2007. Later clearances include K172162, decided on August 16, 2017, for the S1000, S2000 and S3000 at software VE10A, and K183575, decided on March 20, 2019, for the S2000 and S3000 at software VE11A with the Quantitative Ultrasound application. K202683, decided on October 15, 2020, includes the S1000, S2000 and S3000 among several ACUSON platforms.

What is the Siemens ACUSON S2000 cleared to scan?

Under 510(k) K082142, decided on November 13, 2008, the S2000 is cleared for fetal, abdominal, intraoperative, pediatric, small parts, transcranial, OB/GYN, cardiac, pelvic, neonatal and adult cephalic, vascular, musculoskeletal, superficial musculoskeletal and peripheral vascular applications.

How does the ACUSON S2000 differ from the S1000 and S3000?

The S1000 is the entry-level system, focused on vascular and shared-services imaging; it does not support Virtual Touch quantification (VTQ) and is not configured for Quantitative Ultrasound. The S2000 is an all-purpose general-imaging system specializing in women's health. The S3000 is Siemens' premium system, and eSieFusion imaging and eSieGuide needle tracking belong to it rather than to the S2000.

Does Siemens still support the ACUSON S2000?

No. The ACUSON S Family, the S1000, S2000 and S3000, is on Siemens Healthineers' list of end-of-support systems, with the ACUSON Sequoia or ACUSON Redwood as the upgrade path.

Does the ACUSON S2000 support Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS)?

Only at software VE11A, and only when the license-controlled QUS application has been purchased; the VE11A update applies to the S2000 and S3000, not the S1000. Its Ultrasonically-Derived Fat Fraction (UDFF) software was cleared with it under K183575, decided on March 20, 2019.

Is there an ABVS version of the ACUSON S2000?

Yes. The ACUSON S2000 Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) configuration adds automated 3D breast imaging to hand-held scanning, and it works with hand-held transducers such as the 18L6 HD, including for guided needle biopsy. The 14L5BV transducer belongs to the ABVS configuration.
