What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON P500

  1. Inspect the battery pack for heat damage

A battery in one of these systems burned with smoke while the system was in standby, traced to a short circuit from incorrect assembly at the battery supplier; the maker then changed supplier and gave the new battery an improved insulation design.

How: Look for swelling, scorching or heat damage on the pack, and confirm it charges and holds a charge.

  2. Confirm the edition and every licensed option

ICE functions such as Intracardiac Echocardiography, SwiftLink, JoyStick and CartoSound belong to the ICE Edition, several imaging packages are options, and the ICE model does not support SieScape panoramic imaging.

How: Read the label and the system information to tell an ACUSON P500 from an ACUSON P500 ICE, and note which options are licensed.

  3. Confirm the CartoSound option and software level

On ICE Edition units used with CARTO for electrophysiology, the software level sets the link: analog communication with Software 2.0 or 3.0, analog and digital with Software 3.1.

How: Confirm the CartoSound Communication option is licensed, and read the software level on the unit itself.

  4. Test every transducer on each active port

A fault can sit in a transducer or in one of the three active ports, and only trying each pairing shows which.

How: Connect each transducer to each port in turn, and run Transducer Diagnostics to troubleshoot any transducer failure on site.

Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON P500

Is the Siemens ACUSON P500 FDA-cleared?

Yes. Software v3.1 (VC11), which added the ACUSON P500 ICE model name, was cleared under 510(k) K233610 with a decision date of June 12, 2024. The v3.0 level (VC10) was cleared under K213487.

What is the ACUSON P500 ICE Edition?

It is the ACUSON P500 edition that integrates the ACUSON AcuNav family of intracardiac echocardiography catheters. Intracardiac Echocardiography is standard on it, with the SwiftLink catheter connector, JoyStick and CartoSound Communication as options. Its FDA model name, ACUSON P500 ICE, was added in 510(k) K233610, and it does not support SieScape panoramic imaging.

Is the ACUSON P500 the upgrade path for the ACUSON P300?

Yes. The ACUSON P300 has reached end of support, and the ACUSON P500 is its named upgrade path.

What is the ACUSON P500 FROSK edition?

It is the name the ACUSON P500 carried at its launch: the FROSK edition was announced in April 2015 as a point-of-care system for general imaging and emergency medicine. Its 2015 transducer set was the CH5-2, EC9-4, VF10-5, VF13-5 and P4-2.
