What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON Origin
Have the TEE transducer leakage-tested and inspected
A TEE transducer that fails its electrical leakage test must not be used on a patient, and a Z6T has shown an error on activation that moving it to another port did not clear.
How: Ask for a leakage test and look for cuts, tears, fraying and loose parts, then connect and activate the Z6T and confirm it starts without an error.
Inspect every transducer's housing, lens and cable
A transducer with a cracked or damaged housing, acoustic lens, strain relief or cable must not be used, because it risks cross-contamination and compromises electrical safety.
How: Look along each housing, lens, strain relief and cable for cracks and damage, and ask how the transducers were cleaned, since abrasive cleaners, organic solvents, isopropyl alcohol and phenol-based products can damage them and degrade the image.
Inspect the console for fluid and cleaner damage
Fluid that seeps into the electrical circuitry can cause excessive electrical leakage or system failure, and non-approved cleaners can damage surfaces, components and diagnostic performance.
How: Look for damaged surfaces and any sign that liquid has run into the console, and ask which cleaning and disinfecting agents were used on it.
Confirm the software version and the vb30b fix
A sporadic crash while reading data from the database, shown as error us_cac_0, was fixed in software version vb30b.
How: Read the installed version, and on a build older than vb30b ask for the update and its correction record; until it is installed, set the cardiac study transfer option to end of exam rather than during exam.
Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON Origin
Is the Siemens ACUSON Origin FDA-cleared?
Yes. The ACUSON Origin is FDA-cleared under 510(k) as a Class II device (21 CFR 892.1550). Its first clearance, K232145, was decided on October 30, 2023, together with the ACUSON Sequoia and Sequoia Select; later clearances are K240704 (July 22, 2024), K242523 (November 19, 2024), K251481 (August 20, 2025) and K260844 (June 16, 2026).
Under K251481, its indications for use are fetal, abdominal, pediatric, OB/GYN, cardiac, transesophageal, intracardiac, vascular, adult cephalic and peripheral vascular imaging. Virtual Touch Strain Imaging, cleared for the Sequoia systems in K232145, is not cleared on the Origin.
Which transducers work with the Siemens ACUSON Origin?
The ACUSON Origin works with the 4V1, 5C1, 5V1, 5Z1, 7L2, 8V3, 9C2, 10L4, 10V4, 14L5, CW2, CW5, DAX and HLX transducers, the Z6T TEE transducer, and the AcuNav Lumos 4D, AcuNav Crystal 2D and SOUNDSTAR 9F 2D ICE catheters.
AI Assist works with the 5Z1, 5V1 and 8V3 for routine transthoracic echo, and the Needle Enhancement option with the 10L4 and HLX.
How does the ACUSON Origin compare with the ACUSON SC2000?
The Origin is lighter, smaller and faster to maneuver than the ACUSON SC2000, and it is the upgrade path for SC2000 systems at end of support, as it is for the ACUSON Sequoia C512/C256. Its AcuNav Lumos catheter, Z6T and 5Z1 were cleared as substantially equivalent to the SC2000's AcuNav Volume, Z6Ms and 4Z1c.
What is the difference between the ACUSON Origin and the ACUSON Origin ICE?
The ACUSON Origin ICE is an additional model name, cleared in 510(k) K240704, that shares the ACUSON Origin's software and hardware platform. The 5Z1 transducer is not supported or accessible on the Origin ICE.
