What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON NX3 Elite

  1. Confirm the acoustic output recall correction

FDA recall Z-2353-2019 found that transducers on affected software could exceed their acoustic output power values in pulsed wave Doppler, and the recall is listed as open, with not every unit corrected.

How: Read the software version: VA10A to VA10F, VB20A and VB20B are listed as affected, and VB20C is the corrected VB20 release.

  2. Look for fluid ingress at panel seams

Fluid that seeps into the electrical circuitry can cause excessive leakage current or system failure, and spray cleaners can force it in.

How: Inspect the control panel seams, the keyboard and the DVD slot for any sign that fluid has seeped inside.

  3. Inspect the power cable for heat damage

An FDA report describes an NX3 Series system whose power cable melted at a wall outlet with old wiring.

How: Look along the cable and at the plug for melted or heat-marked insulation, and check the outlet the system will use.

  4. Have the V5Ms TEE probe leakage-tested

The V5Ms needs an electrical leakage current test before each use, and one that fails again after its connections are checked must not be used on a patient.

How: Ask for a leakage test on the V5Ms, or run one, and do not accept a probe that fails it.

Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON NX3 Elite

Is the Siemens ACUSON NX3 Elite FDA-cleared?

Yes. It is FDA-cleared under 510(k) K152469, decided September 21, 2015, as the ACUSON NX3 Elite / NX3 Diagnostic Ultrasound System, a Class II device under 21 CFR 892.1550 with product codes IYN, IYO and ITX.

Later clearances cover it too: K173957, decided February 1, 2018; K192835, decided October 22, 2019, which extended its cardiac indication to include transesophageal use; and K202683, decided October 15, 2020, which added lung-ultrasound imaging to the labeling with no new features or software changes.

What is the difference between the ACUSON NX3 Elite and the ACUSON NX3?

Both belong to Siemens' NX3 Series and are cleared under the same 510(k)s. The NX3 Elite's cleared indications add intra-operative use (abdominal, small parts and vascular) and cardiac use including transesophageal, which the NX3's indications do not list.

The NX3 Elite also offers syngo Arterial Health Package, syngo Auto Left Heart, contrast agent imaging and eSie Touch elasticity imaging, features the clearances list for the NX3 Elite only.

Can the Siemens ACUSON NX3 Elite do transesophageal echo?

Yes, with the V5Ms TEE transducer. K192835, decided October 22, 2019, extended the NX3 Elite's cardiac indication to include transesophageal use, and fourSight TEE imaging is listed for the NX3 Elite configuration cleared under K173957 on February 1, 2018.

Is the Siemens ACUSON NX3 Elite discontinued?

Yes. Its FDA device record gives December 31, 2025 as the end of its commercial distribution. Siemens launched it alongside the ACUSON NX3 at Medica 2015 in Düsseldorf.

Where is the Siemens ACUSON NX3 Elite made?

Siemens Healthineers builds it at its facility in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, in the Republic of Korea.
