What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON NX3
Check the software against recall Z-2352-2019
On NX3 units running software VA10A to VA10F, VB20A or VB20B, transducers could exceed their defined acoustic output in PW Doppler because transmit voltages were not loaded correctly.
How: Read the installed software version and ask for the service record showing Siemens' corrective software update.
Inspect each probe's housing, lens and cable
A damaged probe must not be used.
How: Examine the housing, acoustic lens, strain relief and cable of every probe offered, and set aside any probe showing cracks, splits or other damage.
Confirm the model label and each probe's clearance
The NX3 and the NX3 Elite are separate models, and transducers such as the EC10-5w, VF16-5 and V5Ms are FDA-cleared for the NX3 Elite only.
How: Read the model number on the system label, and confirm that every transducer offered is one cleared for the NX3: the CH5-2, VF10-5, VF12-4, EC9-4, P4-2, C8F3, 11L4, 10MC3 or BP10-3.
Restart it several times, including from standby
One NX3 Series system would not power on after a reboot, a fault attributed to an unstable cable connection or improper standby use.
How: Run several cold starts and standby-and-resume cycles, then reseat and inspect the cable connections.
Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON NX3
Is the Siemens ACUSON NX3 FDA-cleared?
Yes. The ACUSON NX3 was first FDA-cleared under 510(k) K152469, decided on September 21, 2015, under regulation 21 CFR 892.1550 with product codes IYN, ITX and IYO. Later clearances are K173957 (February 1, 2018), K192835 (October 22, 2019) and K202683 (October 15, 2020, a multi-system ACUSON submission), and each names both the NX3 and the NX3 Elite.
Has the Siemens ACUSON NX3 been recalled?
Yes. FDA recall Z-2352-2019, initiated by Siemens on January 28, 2019, covers NX3 systems running software VA10A through VA10F, VB20A or VB20B, on which PW Doppler could exceed the defined acoustic output power. Its cause was software design, and in September 2026 its FDA status was Open, Classified.
What is the difference between the Siemens ACUSON NX3 and NX3 Elite?
Both belong to the ACUSON NX3 Series and have a 21.5-inch flat-panel display. In their FDA clearances, the NX3 Elite adds intra-operative indications, transesophageal cardiac use, 12.0 and 13.0 MHz center frequencies, continuous-wave Doppler (CWD), Auto Left Heart and syngo AHP (Arterial Health Package).
Some transducers are cleared for the NX3 Elite only: the EC10-5w, CW2, CW5, VF16-5, VF13-5sp, C8-5, P8-4 and V5Ms. The model number tells the two apart: 11235612 is the NX3 and 11235411 the NX3 Elite.
What exams is the Siemens ACUSON NX3 cleared for?
Its U.S. indications for use under K192835 are fetal, abdominal (including liver), pediatric, small parts (small organ), neonatal cephalic, adult cephalic, transcranial, OB/GYN, pelvic, neonatal, cardiac, vascular (including peripheral vessel), musculoskeletal, superficial musculoskeletal and urology imaging.
