What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON NX2

  1. Confirm the PW Doppler recall correction

FDA recall Z-2350-2019 found that, on affected software, transducers could exceed their acoustic output values in PW Doppler because transmit voltage values were not loaded correctly into the hardware.

How: On units with VA10A, VA10B, VA11A or VA11B software, ask for the service record of the Siemens update, since a VA10C or VA11C version alone does not prove the correction.

  2. Run an electrical safety and leakage test

Electrical safety testing is required for this system, and an extension cord or multi-socket outlet can compromise grounding and push leakage current over its limits.

How: Have the leakage test run with the system plugged straight into a hospital-grade outlet, as US use requires, and reject a unit that fails it.

  3. Inspect the fixed power cord for wear

The ACUSON NX2's power cord is not detachable, so a frayed, split or worn cord means a Siemens service replacement.

How: Do not power on a unit whose cord is frayed, split, worn or tampered with, or whose ground plug is bypassed with an adapter.

  4. Look for fluid inside the console

Fluid that seeps into the electrical circuitry can cause excessive leakage current or system failure, and liquid can damage the control panel.

How: Look for signs that liquid has entered the console or control panel, and follow up any electrical or functional fault found alongside them.

Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON NX2

Is the Siemens ACUSON NX2 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The ACUSON NX2 was cleared under 510(k) K161787, with a decision date of July 28, 2016.

Two later 510(k)s cleared it together with the ACUSON NX2 Elite: K172374 on August 15, 2017, which treats the NX2 as the same system as in K161787, and K173981 on February 2, 2018, which lists the 10MC3 transducer for both systems.

What exams is the Siemens ACUSON NX2 cleared for?

Its first clearance, K161787, includes cardiac, fetal, abdominal (including liver), pediatric, small parts (small organ), transcranial, OB/GYN, pelvic, urology, vascular (including peripheral vessel) and musculoskeletal applications. K173981 adds adult cephalic.

What is the difference between the ACUSON NX2 and the NX2 Elite?

Both are ACUSON NX2 Series systems. The NX2 Elite adds the CW2 and CW5 pencil transducers, which are cleared for the Elite only, and the Advanced fourSight 4D and eSie Touch Elasticity Imaging features.

A fourth active transducer port and 3-Scape imaging are standard on the Elite and options on the NX2. The NX2 offers the fourSight 4D imaging option, which includes 3-Scape and uses the C8F3 transducer.

How is the ACUSON NX2 related to the ACUSON NX3?

The NX2 Series takes its industrial design from the ACUSON NX3. The NX2's first 510(k), K161787, named the ACUSON NX3 (K152469) and the ACUSON X700 (K141846) as predicate devices.
