Siemens ACUSON Cypress portable ultrasound system

The Siemens ACUSON Cypress is a portable cardiovascular ultrasound system for echocardiography and vascular imaging, with transducer technology carried over from the ACUSON Sequoia. It handles adult and pediatric transthoracic echo, multiplane TEE, intracardiac echo with AcuNav catheters, and peripheral and abdominal vascular studies. Its 2006 PLUS release added a 12.1-inch tilting display and home-base controls.

What to check when buying a used Siemens ACUSON Cypress

  1. Watch for smoke or sparks at power-up

A Cypress has sparked and smoked when it was switched on, and another began smoking suddenly during an exam and had to be shut down.

How: Power the unit up and run it through an extended scanning session, and reject it at any smoke, sparking or burning smell.

  2. Have a biomed run an electrical safety test

The Cypress was designed to conform to medical electrical safety standards, and with smoke and sparking reported on the system, a used unit has to be shown to still meet them.

How: Have a biomedical engineer run a leakage test to the medical electrical safety standard before the unit touches a patient, and reject it on a fail.

  3. Feel each transducer's lens and connector after scanning

A Cypress transducer has been found hot to the touch at the lens, the face that rests on the patient, and at its connection to the system.

How: After a period of scanning, touch the lens face and the connector of every transducer, and set aside any that is hot at either point.

  4. Check the serial number against both software recalls

Ranges of Cypress units were recalled for a software problem that lost data and for one that kept an imaging mode from appearing on screen, each fixed with a software change.

How: Read the serial plate and compare it with recalls Z-0975-03 and Z-0744-04, and on a listed unit confirm the software fix was applied and every imaging mode shows on screen.

Common questions about the Siemens ACUSON Cypress

Is the Siemens ACUSON Cypress FDA-cleared?

Yes. The Cypress is FDA-cleared through a series of 510(k)s: K010950 (June 27, 2001), K021497 (July 9, 2002), K042055 (August 16, 2004) and K052331 (November 10, 2005), which classes it as a Class II device.

An earlier clearance, K982800 of September 22, 1998, was granted to the same system under another device name, and the system was marketed as the Cypress.

What is the Siemens ACUSON Cypress cleared to scan?

Its 2005 clearance, K052331, is for general imaging and cardiology: fetal, abdominal, intraoperative cardiac, pediatric, neonatal cephalic, adult and pediatric cardiac, transesophageal, peripheral vessel, intraluminal and intracardiac applications.

Does Siemens still support the ACUSON Cypress?

No. Siemens set December 31, 2019 as the end-of-life date for the Cypress, and its service support is unavailable after that date.

When was the Siemens ACUSON Cypress released?

The Cypress began shipping in North America in June 2000. Its PLUS release was announced on March 23, 2006, for availability at the end of April 2006.

Was the ACUSON Cypress Siemens' first portable ultrasound?

It was Siemens' first portable ultrasound machine for echocardiography. Siemens' first portable ultrasound system of any kind was the SONOLINE 1000 of 1982, and its ACUSON P10 of 2007 is a pocket-sized device.
