Samsung WS80A with Elite cart-based ultrasound system

The Samsung WS80A with Elite is a cart-based ultrasound system that Samsung introduced in the US in February 2015 as its flagship for women's healthcare. Elite is a package of technologies built on the WS80A platform, adding 5D Heart, 5D CNS and 5D Follicle to the 5D NT and 5D LB tools for obstetrics and gynecology. Samsung's October 2015 upgrades to Elite added 5D Heart Color, 5D CNS+ and Crystal Vue.

What to check when buying a used Samsung WS80A with Elite

  1. Check the software against the overheating recall

On certain WS80A software versions, probes could overheat when the Doppler sample volume was reduced in Doppler Only mode, the fault behind FDA recall Z-2276-2019.

How: Read the installed version on the Setup screen's About tab, and if it is 1.00.16, 3.00.17 to 3.00.19, 3.01.00 to 3.01.09, 4.00.08 to 4.00.11 or 4.01.00 to 4.01.09, ask for the service record of the software upgrade; no 2.00 version is on the recall's list.

  2. Inspect every probe's lens, housing, seal and cable

A damaged probe can cause electric shock and other hazards, and forcing the cable by twisting, pulling or bending it damages the probe.

How: Check each probe's housing, lens, strain relief and seal for cracks, broken parts, leaks and sharp edges, then scan with it to catch functional problems.

  3. Ask for the electrical leakage inspection records

The system is meant to be inspected for electrical leakage by Samsung's technicians and to have EN 60601-1 safety inspections by trained persons, so a unit without records has an unknown electrical safety status.

How: Ask for the unit's electrical safety and leakage inspection records, and have a trained person run the leakage tests on a unit that has none.

  4. Check the unit against the Doppler PSV notice

On units listed in field safety notice FSN-WS80A-161122003, a software error could make the auto-measured peak systolic velocity differ from the Doppler scale, intermittently and only in auto measuring mode.

How: Look up the unit's serial number in the notice's appendix, and if it is listed, ask for the service record of the software update by Samsung's service engineers.

Common questions about the Samsung WS80A with Elite

Is the Samsung WS80A with Elite FDA-cleared?

Yes. The WS80A with Elite performance package had FDA 510(k) clearance when it was released in the US in February 2015.

Elite is the package for WS80A version 2.00, which was cleared under K143089 on November 26, 2014, as the WS80A Diagnostic Ultrasound System. Its version 2.00 changes add 5D CNS, 5D Follicle and 5D Heart, the features of the Elite package, though the record does not use the name Elite.

Later WS80A clearances are K153529 on February 2, 2016, for version 3.00, which added 5D Limb Vol, Crystal Vue, further transducers and an intra-operative application, then K171070 on August 9, 2017, and K173513 on February 20, 2018.

What is the difference between the Samsung WS80A and the WS80A with Elite?

Elite is a package of technologies for upgraded WS80A systems, and on WS80A version 2.00 it is the software package rather than a single function.

It builds on the 5D LB and 5D NT of the WS80A by adding 5D Heart for fetal heart examination, 5D CNS for fetal brain measurement and 5D Follicle for follicle measurement, along with S-Vue transducer technology, a convex 3D S-Vue transducer, a 23-inch wide LED screen and an upgraded 3D imaging engine.

Which probes work with the Samsung WS80A with Elite?

On WS80A version 2.00, the release the Elite package belongs to, the cleared transducers are the C2-6, CA1-7A, CA2-8A, CF4-9, CV1-8A, E3-12A, L3-12A, L5-13, LA3-16A, LV3-14A, PE2-4, SC1-6, V4-8, V5-9 and VR5-9, and all of them appear in the WS80A with Elite V3.0 lineup.

Version 3.00 added the CA2-9A, CA3-10A, EA2-11B, LA2-9A, LA3-16AI, LA4-18B, PA3-8B and PM1-6A, and all of them except the LA3-16AI appear in the WS80A with Elite V3.0 lineup.

The EV3-10B, LM4-15B and PA4-12B are listed for the later Elite V4.01, as is the LA3-16AI.

Is the Samsung HERA W10 Elite the same system as the WS80A with Elite?

No. HERA is a separate Samsung platform built on Crystal Architecture, not a software level of the WS80A with Elite.

Does the Samsung WS80A with Elite have elastography in the US?

Yes: ElastoScan strain imaging is a software option, though in the US and Canada its strain value is not applied. On version 2.00 systems, the E-Breast and E-Thyroid options exclude North America.
