What to check when buying a used Samsung WS80A
Check recall Z-2276-2019 for probe overheating
On the software versions this recall lists, a probe could overheat when the Doppler sample volume was made smaller in Doppler Only mode.
How: Read the installed version on the About tab of the Setup screen, match it and the serial number against the recall's affected units, and ask for the record of Samsung's software upgrade.
Ask for a documented electrical leakage inspection
The system is meant to be inspected for electrical leakage by trained technicians, with safety inspections following the EN 60601-1 standard.
How: Ask for the latest leakage inspection record, and connect the unit only to an outlet with a protective earth.
Inspect each probe's housing, lens, cable and seal
A damaged probe can cause electric shock and has to be taken out of use.
How: Look for cracks, broken parts, leaks and sharp edges on the housing, lens, seal and strain relief, and check the cable for damage from being run over by equipment wheels.
Reject a damaged housing or abraded cable
The system is not to be used with a damaged housing or an abraded cable, and liquid that gets inside can cause fire, electric shock or damage.
How: Check the casing for cracks or discoloration from sprayed cleaner, and inspect every cable, cord and plug along its length.
Common questions about the Samsung WS80A
Is the Samsung WS80A FDA-cleared?
Yes. The WS80A is FDA-cleared as a class II device (product codes IYN, IYO and ITX, 21 CFR 892.1550) under these 510(k)s: K133329, decided November 27, 2013; K143089, November 26, 2014; K153529, February 2, 2016; K171070, August 9, 2017; and K173513, February 20, 2018.
What exams is the Samsung WS80A FDA-cleared for?
Its first clearance covers fetal, abdominal, small organ, trans-rectal, trans-vaginal, musculoskeletal (conventional and superficial) and peripheral vessel imaging. Software V2.00 added pediatric, neonatal cephalic, adult cephalic, and adult and pediatric cardiac imaging, and V3.00 added intra-operative use.
The 2018 clearance, K173513, lists fetal and obstetric, abdominal, gynecology, intra-operative, pediatric, small organ, neonatal cephalic, adult cephalic, trans-rectal, trans-vaginal, musculoskeletal, urology, adult and pediatric cardiac, and peripheral vessel applications.
What probes does the Samsung WS80A use for OB/GYN exams?
With software V1.00, the C2-6, SC1-6 and V4-8 carry the obstetric presets for the first, second and third trimesters, fetal echo and NT, and the E3-12A, VR5-9 and V5-9 carry the first-trimester preset. Each of these also carries the gynecology presets, and the E3-12A, VR5-9 and V5-9 carry the prostate preset as well.
The CA1-7A, CA2-8A and CV1-8A, added with software V2.00, are also assigned to abdomen, obstetrics and gynecology.
