What to check when buying a used Samsung RS85
Have electrical leakage tested before you buy
The console's maintenance history can affect its electrical safety, and it must run only from a power supply with protective earth.
How: Ask for a recent leakage inspection by Samsung service or another trained person, and run the demo only from an earthed outlet.
Watch for error messages through a long scan
An RS85 reported to the FDA showed an error message mid-scan and smelled of smoke after a reboot, from defective electrical components on its circuit board.
How: Scan for an extended session, note any error code, and treat a hazard warning, a burning smell or a break in the scanning sequence as a hardware fault to fix before purchase.
Inspect the casing, cables, cords and plugs
A cracked, chipped or torn face, a damaged housing or an abraded cable rules the unit out of use, and a cord pulled out by its cable can short-circuit.
How: Look over the casing and every cable, cord and plug for cracks, chips, tears and abrasion, with extra care where the power cord meets its plug.
Check the air filters, vents and heat warnings
A clogged air filter can overheat the console, adding noise and cutting reliability and performance, and high internal temperature brings a warning and then a shutdown.
How: Pull the filters to judge the dust they hold and refit them only when dry, confirm nothing blocks the vents, and watch for a temperature warning during a long demo.
Common questions about the Samsung RS85
Is the Samsung RS85 FDA-cleared?
Yes. The RS85 Diagnostic Ultrasound System was cleared under 510(k) K173204, a traditional 510(k) for a Class II device found substantially equivalent on February 5, 2018.
Two more RS85 clearances followed: K182932 on February 15, 2019, and K191115 on June 12, 2019, a special 510(k) that added software V1.05.
K192903, decided on January 6, 2020, added software V2.00 under the RS85 Prestige name, and the later clearances K210959 (June 24, 2021), K221117 (June 17, 2022) and K240516 (June 12, 2024) carry that name as well.
Do RS80A probes work on the Samsung RS85?
The original probe set is shared: the RS85's first clearance, K173204, lists the transducers of the RS85, RS80A, WS80A and HS70A as identical, and gives the RS85 the RS80A's clinical intended use.
Transducers that came with software V2.00, the RS85 Prestige level, are outside that comparison.
Is the Samsung RS85 the same system as the RS80 EVO?
In the clearances that include both systems, starting with K210959 on June 24, 2021, the RS85 and RS80 EVO are the same system and differ only in option configurations.
Those clearances also carry the RS85 Prestige name, so the comparison describes the RS85 of those filings rather than every earlier configuration.
When was the Samsung RS85 released?
Samsung introduced the RS85 on November 20, 2017, first in Korea and Europe. The FDA cleared it for the US under K173204 on February 5, 2018.
