What to check when buying a used Samsung R20

  1. Run an electrical safety test before clinical use

The R20 is designed to meet IEC standards for basic safety, EMC and ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, and a used unit's history gives no proof that it still does.

How: Have a biomedical technician run an incoming electrical safety test on the unit before its first clinical use, and do not accept a unit that fails it.

  2. Confirm MI and TI appear with every probe

The R20 shows its mechanical index and thermal index on screen automatically in real time, so an index that fails to appear leaves the operator without the system's acoustic output readout.

How: Scan with each transducer offered with the unit and check that both the MI and the TI values stay on screen while imaging.

  3. Confirm the software build and licensed options

R20 features depend on the software build and the licensed options, and many of its AI and quantification tools are options that may need a separate purchase.

How: Check the installed software build and every licensed option on the unit itself, and match them against each feature the unit is offered with.

  4. Confirm each offered probe images on this unit

Transducers were added to the R20 family across its FDA clearances and their availability varies by configuration, so a probe offered with the unit does not prove its installed software runs it.

How: Connect each transducer offered and confirm that the system recognizes it and produces an image under the installed software.

Common questions about the Samsung R20

Is the Samsung R20 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The R20 is cleared under FDA 510(k) K241971, decided substantially equivalent on October 11, 2024, in a clearance it shares with the HERA Z20, HERA Z30 and R30.

A second 510(k), K252018, decided on January 5, 2026, includes the same four systems plus the HERA Z20e and HERA Z20s, and adds an ophthalmic clinical application.

The cleared applications include fetal/obstetric, abdominal, gynecology, pediatric, small organ, musculoskeletal, urology, cardiac, thoracic and peripheral vessel imaging, for prescription use.

When did the Samsung R20 come out?

Samsung launched the R20 in India on November 24, 2025, and announced its first US showing for RSNA 2025 on November 30, 2025. Its first FDA 510(k) clearance, K241971, was decided on October 11, 2024.

How is the Samsung R20 different from the Z20?

Samsung offers the R20 for general imaging and the Z20 for advanced maternal-fetal medicine and complex obstetric and gynecologic cases. In Samsung's US line, the R20 sits under General Imaging and Point of Care, and the Z20 under Women's Health.
