What to check when buying a used Mindray DP-50

  1. Have a biomed run electrical safety tests

Insulation wears with service time or a fault, and worn insulation makes the unit's leakage readings swing more with humidity.

How: Ask for a safety-analyzer test of ground, enclosure and patient leakage before the unit is used on patients.

  2. Reject a battery showing odor, heat or deformation

A battery that gives off odor or heat, or is deformed or discolored, must come out of use, and leaving the unit in standby through storage or shipping can drain its batteries and damage them for good.

How: Inspect each pack, ask how the unit was stored, and note any battery end-of-life alarm.

  3. Inspect the power cord, plug and pins

A bent or discolored pin, a damaged strain relief or a plug that warms in use is a power fault to fix before the unit goes into service.

How: Look for broken, bent or discolored pins and damage along the cord and at the strain relief, and feel the plug for warmth while the unit runs.

  4. Inspect each probe's lens, housing and cable

A defective probe can cause electric shock, and gel left on the face can let water into the acoustic lens and affect performance and safety.

How: Look for cracks, peeling, looseness or other damage on every probe, cable and connector, and check that no gel has been left on any face.

Common questions about the Mindray DP-50

Does the Mindray DP-50 have color Doppler?

No. The DP-50 is a black-and-white system that images in B mode and M mode; Color Doppler is an option on its sibling, the DP-50 Expert, which has Power Doppler as standard.

The 2020 family clearance adds PW, Color and Power modes across five models without saying which model carries each.

Is the Mindray DP-50 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The DP-50 was cleared under 510(k) K111435, decided July 8, 2011, as a pulsed-echo ultrasonic imaging system (product code IYO). A later family clearance, K200979, was decided May 28, 2020.

How are the DP-50T, DP-50S and DP-50Pro related to the Mindray DP-50?

They were cleared with the DP-50 and the DP-50 Expert under one 510(k), K200979, decided May 28, 2020, in which they are new models and the original DP-50 is the primary predicate. That clearance adds 4D, Smart 3D, Free Xros M, iScape View, HPRF and other features across the family without saying which model carries each.
