What to check when buying a used Mindray DC-80

  1. Have a biomed run electrical safety tests

They measure protective earth resistance and earth, enclosure and patient leakage, which no visual inspection can show.

How: Run the tests with a safety analyzer, earth leakage first, and include the power cord plug, enclosure, labeling and the applied-part tests.

  2. Inspect each probe's head, cable and pins

A probe with a damaged or scratched surface or exposed wiring carries a risk of electric shock.

How: Look for cracks or swelling on the head, worn or peeling cable and bent or missing connector pins, and freeze the system before connecting or disconnecting a probe.

  3. Reject probes Mindray does not specify

An aftermarket probe can damage the system and cause a profound failure, in the worst case a fire.

How: Confirm every probe offered is a Mindray probe specified for the DC-80, and turn down any aftermarket probe.

  4. Inspect the power cable, plug and breaker

A cracked or deteriorated cable, bent or discolored plug pins, or a plug that warms in use all fail the electrical safety inspection.

How: Check the cable, plug and strain relief for damage, then confirm the circuit breaker switches on and off and the power indicator lights with the breaker up and the plug seated.

Common questions about the Mindray DC-80

Is the Mindray DC-80 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The DC-80 is FDA-cleared under 510(k) K173471, a Class II clearance decided on January 8, 2018 that also names the DC-80S, DC-80 PRO, DC-80 EXP and DC-85. It is named again in K192152, decided on December 13, 2019.

The K173471 submission names the Mindray DC-8 as its primary predicate device, with the Resona 7, DC-70 and M9 as reference devices.

What exams is the Mindray DC-80 cleared for?

It is cleared for adults, pregnant women, pediatric patients and neonates in fetal, abdominal, pediatric, small-organ (breast, thyroid, testes), neonatal and adult cephalic, transrectal, transvaginal, musculoskeletal (conventional and superficial), adult and pediatric cardiac, peripheral vessel, urology and transesophageal cardiac exams. Its intended uses also include intra-operative exams.

How does the Mindray DC-80 differ from the DC-80S, DC-80 PRO, DC-80 EXP and DC-85?

One FDA clearance, K173471, and one operator's manual apply to all five systems. The DC-80 has B-hist, B-profile and Color Vel; the DC-80S lacks Color Vel, the DC-80 PRO lacks B-hist, the DC-80 EXP lacks B-profile, and the DC-85 lacks both B-profile and Color Vel.

Is the Mindray DC-80A the same machine as the DC-80?

No. The DC-80A and the DC-80 are separate Mindray products, both in Mindray's women's health and cardiology lines.

Where can I find the Mindray DC-80 operator's manual?

The DC-80 Basic Ultrasound operator's manual, revision 1.0 (part number H-046-011355-01, released September 2019), is filed under Legacy Ultrasound Products on Mindray's North American website.
