What to check when buying a used GE Voluson Expert 22
Inspect the power cable and run safety tests
A system or probe that fails an electrical safety test must not be used, and a damaged power cable has to be swapped for a new one.
How: Check the cable, plug and inlet for damage and the inlet's retainer, then have trained personnel run the electrical safety tests on the system and its probes.
Check the wheels, brakes and swivel locks
A cart system with worn casters, or a brake or lock that does not hold, cannot be moved and parked safely.
How: Look for wear on the wheels and casters, work the gas-spring-assisted foot brake and its release, and test the wheel and swivel locks, whose front and rear pedals are linked.
Get the encryption password and recovery key
With disk encryption on, scanning and stored data cannot be reached without the password, recovery key or USB unlock key, and GE cannot undo the encryption.
How: Ask whether Advanced Security Features is active, and have the password, recovery key or USB unlock device handed over with the unit.
Confirm the system type and software level
The software level decides which options and probes a unit can run, and earlier units can be upgraded to BT24 or BT25.
How: Open System Setup > Administration > System Info to read the system type, serial number and software version, and check the serial number against the rear label.
Common questions about the GE Voluson Expert 22
Is the GE Voluson Expert 22 FDA-cleared?
Yes. The Voluson Expert 22 is FDA-cleared under 510(k) as a Class II device (product code IYN, 21 CFR 892.1550). Its first clearance, K220358, was decided on June 6, 2022, for the Voluson Expert 22, 20 and 18. Later clearances are K231965 (October 30, 2023), K242168 (December 20, 2024) and K252328 (November 24, 2025), which adds C1-6-D support to the SonoLyst 1st Trimester feature.
It is cleared as a general-purpose system for fetal/OB, abdominal (including gynecology, pelvic and infertility monitoring), pediatric, small organ, neonatal and adult cephalic, adult and pediatric cardiac, musculoskeletal, vascular, transvaginal and transrectal use in a hospital or medical clinic.
How is the Voluson Expert 22 different from the Expert 20 and Expert 18?
The Expert 22 is the top model of the Voluson Expert Series and supports all of the series' probes; the Expert 20 and Expert 18 carry a subset of its probes and software and hardware features. The eM6C G3 electronic 4D probe runs on the Expert 22 only, and the RIC6-12-D is not available on the Expert 20.
Only the Expert 22 has the 23.8-inch HDU monitor, a 2 TB rather than 1 TB patient-data drive and the optional e4D Advanced Features; the Expert 20 and 18 use a 23.8-inch LCD.
Can an older Voluson Expert 22 be upgraded to BT25?
Yes. Earlier units can be upgraded to BT24 (EC410) or BT25 (EC420) software. An upgraded unit keeps its separate operating-system SSD and patient-data drive, while a factory-built BT25 unit keeps system and patient data on one 2 TB NVMe SSD.
What is the Voluson Expert 22 Pro?
The Pro, Plus, Premium and Exceed are suffix variants of the Voluson Expert 22 that are sold in China only.
Can Shear Wave Elastography be used in pregnancy on the Voluson Expert 22?
No. Shear Wave Elastography is an optional mode on the Expert 22, dependent on probe and application, and it must not be used during pregnancy.
Where is the GE Voluson Expert 22 made?
GE HealthCare manufactures it in Zipf, Austria.
