GE Voluson E10 cart-based ultrasound system

The GE Voluson E10 is an OB/GYN ultrasound system with real-time 3D/4D imaging for women's health practices that handle complex cases. On BT21 software it has four active probe ports and a 23-inch monitor, and weighs 147 kg without peripherals. GE launched it in 2014 in its Voluson Expert Series; it differs from the Voluson E8 and E6 in having more scan channels and hardware for the eM6C and eM6C G2 probes.

What to check when buying a used GE Voluson E10

  1. Inspect covers and power cord before safety testing

Neither the system nor any probe that fails part of the electrical safety test may be used.

How: Look for missing or loose enclosure covers and for damaged insulation or strain relief on the power cord, plug and inlet, then have the system and each probe's leakage tested to IEC 60601-1.

  2. Inspect each probe's lens, housing and cable

A probe with any sign of wear, or with punctured or compromised insulation, must not be used.

How: Look for cracks and holes in each enclosure and lens, and check the cable and strain relief at both ends.

  3. Test every 4D volume probe for vibration

Rough handling in transport or disinfection can leave RIC probes with dead elements and shocked head mechanics, and adverse-event reports describe a RAB6-D that buzzed and RIC5-9-D probes that leaked oil, came apart or vibrated uncontrollably.

How: Run each 4D probe's sweep and feel for abnormal vibration, look for oil at the RIC probe tips, and ask how the RIC probes were transported and disinfected.

  4. Check a RIC5-9-D against recall Z-1964-2019

Affected RIC5-9-D probes needed a probe-alignment correction under that recall.

How: Compare each RIC5-9-D's serial number with the recall and confirm the correction was completed.

Common questions about the GE Voluson E10

Is the GE Voluson E10 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The Voluson E10 is FDA-cleared as a Class II device under 21 CFR 892.1550, product codes IYN, IYO and ITX, for prescription use. Its most recent clearance under its own name, K201768, was decided on October 22, 2020; earlier clearances, such as K192159 of August 29, 2019, cover it together with the Voluson E6 and E8.

Can a Voluson E10 be upgraded to BT21?

Yes. GE sells a software-only upgrade for the Voluson E10, E8 and E6 from BT17 to BT19, and a hardware-and-software upgrade from BT19 to BT21. The BT21 upgrade installs Windows 10 version 1809, 64-bit.

Is contrast imaging available on the Voluson E10 in the U.S.?

No. Contrast Imaging and Coded Contrast Imaging + 3D HyCoSy are system options that are not for sale in the USA and are not FDA-cleared.
