What to check when buying a used GE Versana Active

  1. Reject a damaged, leaking or deformed battery

A battery that is damaged, leaking, deformed or discolored, or that gives off odor or heat, has to be taken out of use.

How: Inspect each pack, press its TEST button to read the fuel-gauge LEDs, and confirm the status LED shows green when charged and orange when low.

  2. Inspect the AC adapter and power cable

A damaged adapter, cable or cord is a power fault, and a defective AC-DC adapter has to be exchanged before use.

How: Check the adapter, its cable, the power cord and every connector for damage.

  3. Have a biomed run electrical leakage tests

Excess leakage that follows a probe takes that probe out of service, while leakage that follows the connector slot points to the console.

How: Where the leakage follows the slot, inspect the system connector for bent pins, poor connections and ground continuity.

  4. Inspect the housing, covers and connectors

Missing covers, shielding or screws can cause interference while scanning, and neither the console nor its probe connector is waterproof.

How: Look for dents, scratches, cracks and signs of liquid ingress, confirm every cover, EMI shield, panel and screw is in place, and check each external connector for damage.

Common questions about the GE Versana Active

Is the GE Versana Active FDA-cleared?

Yes. The GE Versana Active is FDA-cleared under 510(k) K191798, decided August 9, 2019, and K200998, decided June 11, 2020, as a Class II ultrasonic pulsed doppler imaging system under 21 CFR 892.1550 (product codes IYN, IYO and ITX).

The 2020 clearance added the RAB2-6-RS volume probe with 3D and 4D imaging and a biopsy guide, Tomographic Ultrasound Imaging (TUI), two more mobile cart options, a video output adapter from HDMI to S-video and CVBS, and the Spare Battery Charger.

What exams is the GE Versana Active cleared for?

Its 2020 clearance, K200998, includes fetal/obstetric, abdominal, gynecology, urology, pediatric, small organ (breast, testes, thyroid), neonatal and adult cephalic, adult and pediatric cardiac, vascular and peripheral vascular, conventional and superficial musculoskeletal, thoracic/pleural, transcranial, transrectal and transvaginal use, plus interventional guidance for tissue biopsy, fluid drainage and vascular and non-vascular access.

The cleared modes are B, M, PW Doppler, CW Doppler, Color Doppler, Color M Doppler, Power Doppler, Harmonic Imaging, Coded Pulse, 3D, 4D and combined modes.

Does the GE Versana Active do 4D?

Yes, as an option. Static 3D/Real-time 4D runs with the RAB2-6-RS volume probe, with TUI in the same package, and Easy 3D and Advanced 3D are separate options.

The probe and 4D are tied to software: they are marked as available on v1.5 and also described as for R1.1.x only, and those two levels are not stated to be the same release. A 4D port is specified only for R1.1.x, so read the unit's software version and confirm that it recognizes the RAB2-6-RS.

Where is the GE Versana Active made?

GE builds it in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China, and a factory site in India has also been on record for it since 2022.
