GE LOGIQ S8 cart-based ultrasound system

The GE LOGIQ S8 is a cart-based multipurpose ultrasound system for abdominal, vascular, breast, small parts, OB/GYN, cardiac, pediatric, musculoskeletal and urologic imaging. GE placed it above the LOGIQ S7 Expert and below the LOGIQ E9, and it took 4D and the transesophageal application from the E9. GE launched it in 2011 and also sold it as the LOGIQ S8 with XDclear, a variant released in 2015.

What to check when buying a used GE LOGIQ S8

  1. Have electrical safety and leakage tests run

Grounding continuity, chassis leakage and probe leakage tests find an electrical fault in the console or a probe before the system is used on a patient.

How: Have a trained person run them with every probe connected in turn, and if one probe fails, test another to tell a probe fault from a scanner fault; leakage that follows one port points to bent pins, a poor connection or lost ground continuity in that connector.

  2. Inspect the power cord and plug

A LOGIQ S8 power plug has been reported melted around one prong at the wall outlet, so the cord and plug are a safety item on this console.

How: Look along the cord for cuts, tire marks, exposed insulation and loose hardware, look at the plug for melting around the prongs, and have continuity checked and the cord clamps tightened.

  3. Confirm the S4-10-D recall fix on early software

On R1.1.1 and R1.5.1 software, using the flow model in the cardiac application with the S4-10-D probe could raise acoustic output above its design specification and heat the probe surface, with a risk of skin burn.

How: Read the release under Utility > System > About, and on either release with an S4-10-D probe, get the record that the correction for recall Z-1096-2013 was completed before the probe is used.

  4. Confirm the wrong-patient image recall was corrected

On units built between August and October 2011, an image from a different patient, or the patient's image under another patient's title information, could appear when PRINT was set to save in DICOM format and pressed during LOGIQView pre-mode.

How: Read the build date on the rating plate, and for a unit in that range, get the record of the software update for recall Z-1093-2012 and confirm saved and printed images carry the right patient.

Common questions about the GE LOGIQ S8

Is the GE LOGIQ S8 FDA-cleared?

Yes. The LOGIQ S8 is a Class II ultrasonic pulsed Doppler imaging system, FDA-cleared under 510(k) K111582 on July 26, 2011, with later clearances under K131527 (August 26, 2013), K152195 (September 29, 2015) and K170445 (April 11, 2017).

Under K170445 it is cleared for use by a qualified physician in fetal and obstetric, abdominal, pediatric, small organ (breast, testes, thyroid), neonatal and adult cephalic, adult and pediatric cardiac, peripheral vascular, conventional and superficial musculoskeletal, urology (including prostate), transrectal, transvaginal, transesophageal and intraoperative (abdominal, thoracic, vascular) exams.

What is the difference between the LOGIQ S8 and the LOGIQ E9?

GE placed the LOGIQ E9 at the top of the LOGIQ line and the LOGIQ S8 just below it, as an upper-mid system with the applications and measurement functions of the top-tier E series.

The LOGIQ E9 was a predicate for the S8's first clearance, and later clearances brought E9 features across: 4D, the transesophageal application, Measure Assistant and the C2-9-D, RAB6-D and RIC5-9-D probes in 2013, then the C1-6-D and RSP6-16-D probes in 2015. Shear wave elastography reached the S8 in 2015, cleared with the LOGIQ E9 as the predicate for that mode.

How does the LOGIQ S8 compare with the LOGIQ S7?

GE placed the LOGIQ S7 Expert as the mid model of the LOGIQ line, built on the basic performance of the higher-tier LOGIQ S8.

Some S7 features moved up to the S8 through its clearances: B Steer+ in 2013, the BE9CS and L3-12-D probes in 2015, and Email to MMS and strain elastography on the BE9CS-D in 2017. The S7 Expert/Pro was cleared with a 7-inch touch screen, where the R3 S8 has a 9-inch one.

How does the LOGIQ S8 differ from the LOGIQ E10?

The two are built on different imaging architectures: the LOGIQ S8 XDclear 2.0+ on S-Agile Acoustic Architecture, and the LOGIQ E10 series on cSound Architecture.
